About the event

Jazz for Freedom is Ensemble Arts Philly’s annual education program connecting jazz music with Black history, cultural identity, and civic understanding. Designed for students in grades 5–7, the program begins with interactive in-school workshops led by Teaching Artists, where students explore the history of jazz, its roots in Black American music, and its role in the Civil Rights Movement and social change.

The experience culminates in a free field trip to the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater, where students enjoy a dynamic live performance featuring music, dance, spoken word, and storytelling. Through this engaging journey—from the birth of jazz in New Orleans to Philadelphia’s vibrant jazz scene—Jazz for Freedom inspires young audiences to connect history, creativity, and community while discovering the powerful role music can play in shaping a more just and compassionate future.
